AHMC Welcomes New Board Members

Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - Aventura Hospital and Medical Center's Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Norman Leopold and Heather Rohan, C.E.O. announced the appointment of four new members of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Board of Trustees.

The Board welcomed Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Beamon of the Bob Beamon Foundation; Leonard Brenner, President, Joint Council of Aventura; Mayor Shirley Gibson, City of Miami Gardens; and area lung specialist Dr. Charles Shenkter.

In the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico City, Mexico, Mr. Bob Beamon became an international star by shattering the long-jump record by almost two feet, setting an Olympic record of 29' 2˝" that still remains unbroken today. Since then, Mr. Beamon has worked tirelessly through philanthropist endeavors to the benefit of children of impoverished areas with many different charities, including the Bob Beamon Foundation.

One of the founding fathers and leader behind the movement to incorporate the City of Aventura in 1995, Mr. Leonard Brenner has been an integral part of this North East Miami-Dade Community for over 30 years, long before incorporation. Mr. Brenner remains actively involved in government, community and human interest issues for the City as President of the Joint Council of Aventura - a body of more than 50 Aventura condominiums represented by their board of directors.

A retired 17-year Miami-Dade Police Officer, Mayor Shirley Gibson has a diverse background in the public and non-profit sector. She has served on numerous community boards, including the Community Council Three, Miami Dade's Democratic Party Executive Committee, North Dade Municipal Advisory Committee, the Committee to Incorporate the City of Miami Gardens, and the National Council of Negro Women, Miami-Dade County Section.

A renowned lung specialist, Dr. Charles Shenker has been on staff at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center since 1979. A native f New Jersey, Dr. Shenker completed both undergraduate and medical school at the University of Miami, completing his internships and residencies at the University of Alabama's Pulmonary Medicine Program. Dr. Shenker resides and practices in Aventura.

In welcoming these four new members of the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Board of Trustees, Heather J. Rohan, C.E.O. said "We are thrilled to welcome these four extraordinary community members who will undoubtedly be invaluable contributors to our efforts at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center to continue to provide excellent healthcare."

The Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Board of Trustees is a 15-member group made up of community leaders from the facility's primary and secondary service areas, including the Cities of Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, North Miami Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and Miami Gardens. Other members include City of Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper, Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Danny Iglesias, Aventura Hospital's Chief of Staff Dr. Enrique Hanabergh, Dr. Mark Firestone, Dr. Bruce Weissman, Meg Greeen, Aletha Player, Bob Hollander, Enid Weissman, and Stephen Royal.
